Momentum for inclusion is causing the wall between special and general education to disappear. Requests for student support are growing exponentially. With the power of the reauthorization of IDEA in 2004, this momentum is inevitable. Directors of Special Education, Administrators and IEP Teams are challenged to make fair and reasonable decisions in an effort to pinpoint, with accuracy, where to allocate resources. Mere “yes” or “no” decisions based on subjective impressions is not sufficient to establish impartiality.
Every time a student is removed from the general education setting, costs increase. SIBS® helps design an Intervention Action Plan with the first intent to keep students in the general education classroom. However, if a student needs to be removed, SIBS® helps to determine the amount of time and the type of interventions. In some cases, results may call for partial support in some settings, and not others, during the day. The SIBS® Intervention Action Plan is designed to accommodate the student in both settings.
Objectivity is a necessary requirement to describe student actions in the classroom setting. SIBS® promotes objectivity through:
- Multiple observations with multiple people in multiple settings.
- Observers that are trained to use a framework to describe and record behaviors that enhance or detract from student work.
Educators are making day to day decisions on the level of support and placement of students in programs and settings. SIBS provides an observational FRAMEWORK to collect, analyze and interpret data on student behavior. Embedded in the framework is a common language for educators, parents, and advocates to use in the discussion of student behavior.
