Sonday System 2Sonday System 2

The Sonday System 2 guides intermediate reading, writing and spelling instruction, reading intervention, instruction for English Language Learners (ELL) and is highly effective in the Response to Intervention (RtI) model. The Sonday System 2 is a continuation of Sonday System 1 and guides the instruction for intermediate reading and intervention with emphasis on multi-syllabic words, prefixes and suffixes. The lesson plans are structured and systematic which increases the comfort level of instructors and students while allowing the student to progress as quickly as possible but as slowly as necessary. The instructional design decreases training time for special and general education teachers, educational assistants, volunteers, clinicians, parents, homeschoolers and tutors who need to deliver quality instruction immediately. The Sonday System 2 follows the research recommendations of the No Child Left Behind Act, N.I.H and the National Reading Panel.

The Sonday System 2 provides a lesson template for instructors to teach the essential skills to their students in every lesson, every day. The system is an Orton-Gillingham based, systematic, explicit, sequential, and cumulative multisensory language instruction program which cements student learning into long-term memory. The system is easy for instructors to use and the Learning Plan Book contains: an entry test, a check for knowledge, thirty-four Reading Levels, mastery checks and templates for creating personal learning plans.

It is recommended that a student complete Sonday System 1 or have all of the skills address in Sonday System 1 before moving onto Sonday System 2. Many students who are struggling should begin with Sonday System 1; it is important for students to have a firm foundation before learning new concepts and the only way to fill in the gaps a learner has is to start at the beginning. Like Sonday System 1, the Sonday System 2 is skill based not age or grade based. The Sonday System 2 is ideal for intervention and the learner should be at least at a 3rd grade reading level or higher before beginning.

Before beginning Sonday System 2 the student should be able to recite the alphabet, write upper and lower case letters, know the difference between consonants and vowels, know the sounds of the consonants and beginning consonant blends, read confidently at a 3rd level or higher and pass the entrance test found in the Sonday System 2 Learning Plan Book. If a student has completed the Sonday System 1 they have gained these skills and are ready to move on.

The concepts and elements taught in Sonday System 2 are:

  • Brief Review of Concepts Taught in Sonday System 1 (Check For Knowledge), Syllable Types, Syllable Division, Prefixes, Suffixes With Governing Rules, Roots, Contractions, Non-Phonetic Words, Vocabulary and Comprehension.

Through the consistent use of the Sonday System 2, instructor knowledge and student success increase simultaneously. Over time, this process delivers long term, lasting gains to instructor’s knowledge base and student achievement.
