System Material Overview

Sonday System 1Sonday System 1

The Sonday System 1 guides beginning reading, writing and spelling instruction, reading intervention, instruction for English Language Learners (ELL) and is highly effective in the Response to Intervention (RtI) model.  The Sonday System 1 provides a lesson template for instructors to teach the essential skills to their students in every lesson, every day. The system is an Orton-Gillingham based, systematic, explicit, sequential, and cumulative multisensory language instruction program which cements student learning into long-term memory. The system is easy for instructors to use and contains: a check for knowledge, five Pre-Reading and thirty-six Reading Levels, mastery checks and templates for creating personal learning plans.

The lesson plans are structured and systematic which increases the comfort level of instructors and students while allowing the student to progress as quickly as possible but as slowly as necessary. The instructional design decreases training time for special and general education teachers, educational assistants, volunteers, clinicians, parents, homeschoolers and tutors who need to deliver quality instruction immediately. The Sonday System 1 follows the research recommendations of the No Child Left Behind Act, N.I.H and the National Reading Panel.

The Sonday System 1 is skill based not age or grade based. The system is used with students beginning in early elementary and ideal for intervention of all levels and ages. Upon completion of the Sonday System 1 a student would be ready for Sonday System 2. If a student is struggling or below a 4th grade reading or spelling level they should begin with Sonday System 1; it is important for students to have a firm foundation before learning new concepts and the only way to fill in the gaps a learner has is to start at the beginning. So for many students they must start with Sonday System 1 no matter their age or grade.

The concepts and elements taught in Sonday System 1 are:

  • Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness, Consonant and Vowel Sounds, Vowel Pairs, Consonant Blends and Diagraphs, R Controlled Vowels, Vowel Consonant-e, Compound Words, Non-Phonetic Words, Spelling, Rules for English Language, Reading/Writing Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension.

Through the consistent use of the Sonday System 1, instructor knowledge and student success increase simultaneously. Over time, this process delivers long term, lasting gains to instructor’s knowledge base and student achievement. Click on the below links for more information.
