Review Samples of Sonday System 1 Learning Plans and Mastery Checks
The Sonday System 1 Learning Plan Book is 214 pages and contains five Pre-Reading Levels and thirty-six Reading Levels. Each Sonday System 1 Reading Level has the same guided lesson format which is structured, sequential, explicit and multisensory. The Learning Plan design is straightforward and saves teachers hours of preparation time. All of the essential components of reading emphasized by the National Reading Panel are addressed in each Learning Plan. The Learning Plans are flexibly structured to permit continuous practice and review while maintaining variety and interest. Manipulatives for each Learning Plan are clearly listed. Instructional content is printed in red and clear delivery procedures in black. Instruction is student-driven and ongoing assessments are included every third Reading Level.
The Learning Plans contain detailed instructions so that, with or without formal training in education, anyone can easily use this program, but of course professional development is available. Each lesson is broken into sections that have clearly marked time limits to aid the instructor with pacing. Each Reading Level has six steps: 1. Read Sounds, 2. Spell Sounds, 3. Read Words, 4. Spell Words, 5. Introduce New Material, and 6. Read Aloud. Each Reading Level contains material for multiple lessons, how many exactly depends on the level, instructor and student or group of students. A session takes approximately thirty to forty minutes. A Reading Level may need to be repeated multiple times.
Mastery Checks for Reading and Spelling are written into the Learning Plans every third Reading Level. The instructor would incorporate the Mastery Check of Reading in the 3. Read Words section of the lesson. The student is ready to move onto the next Reading Level if they have scored 90% or better. If their score is lower than 90% two more sessions should be given before retesting the student. For the Mastery Check for Spelling at least 17 out of 20 words (85%) must be correct before the student proceeds to the next Reading Level. When a student needs to review past material, before moving onto the next Reading Level, the instructor can chose to review the past Reading Level or create their own personalized learning plan with the template provided in the Learning Plan Book. Through the consistent use of the Sonday System 1, instructor knowledge and student success increases simultaneously. Over time, this process delivers long term, lasting gains to instructor’s knowledge base and student achievement.
