Multisensory Language Instruction Module
Winsor Learning/Sonday System
This instructional sequence is designed for teachers to master the skills of diagnostic teaching. The program ensures a level of professional competence; the following components are necessary to effectively deliver the Sonday System, an Orton-Gillingham based multisensory, systematic structured phonics program used to teach written language skills. This training provides professional development as recommended by NIH research and in accordance with the No Child Left Behind guidelines.
- A 2-day, 12-hour training installation will provide the basic understanding for ability to implement the program. Four monthly onsite follow-up coaching visits begin 2-3 weeks after the installation. This is within a one-semester time frame.
- Ongoing and sustained professional development broadens the base of knowledge, solidifies the foundation and strengthens the principles of multisensory teaching. A second semester equivalent includes a one-day (6-hour) teacher in service and 4 additional follow-up coaching visits. May vary based on background and experience. This provides professional development as recommended by NIH research and in accordance to the No Child Left Behind guidelines.
- Some teachers and students will be ready to move beyond Sonday System 1 by midyear. At this point it is possible for teachers to move to the Sonday System 2 instructional materials and appropriate training module so that students will continue learning and progress at their own pace.
- To hold Sonday System Level 1 Certification and be a qualified Sonday System coach a full year including at least 90 sessions with student(s) plus a 4-day summer lecture/practicum are required.
- For those individuals designated as facilitators who are not in the classroom, an alternative option would involve the facilitators working with a student or with small groups 3 times a week (35 minute sessions) for the academic year. Facilitators would be observed by Sonday System coaches during regular monthly visits. Facilitators need hands-on experience. This system of teaching is different.
- Facilitators will also shadow and participate with coaches each month throughout the academic year. (Two days, 6 hours per month.)
- For Sonday System 2 Certification, the same sequence would be required.
- As attrition occurs among facilitators, teachers with Sonday System teaching experience can fill the positions.
Teachers, tutors, and facilitators will have access to Winsor Learning education experts and an optional e-mail or online database to answer any academic questions they might have.
